Beautiful day and I am behind the eight ball. Not sure if people say that these days to mean behind schedule. It was a phrase my mother used a lot. It came from the game of pool.
I looked it up and here is the explanation. Funny, I never realized this was what it referred to until now.
In the game of Eight Ball If the cue ball accidentally hits the eighth ball or the black ball, that is a foul shot. You cannot create a direct shot at the ball since the black ball is becoming an obstruction. If the eight ball is pocketed, the game is lost.
So much to do that I am about to lose the game. I guess that is why people use it when their schedule is too full. The term was first printed in the 1920's. Learn something new everyday if you want to. Cheers!
